WBV refers to the action of the whole body being exposed to vibration through a vibrating platform or unit. It allows the user to gain all of the physiological benefits of exercise and therapy, but in a condensed time frame. Below is a webinar that shows how to incorporate Whole Body Vibration into you practice.

WHAT IS WHOLE BODY VIBRATION?

A vibrating platform

Offers the physiologic benefits of an hour long workout in just 10-15min

Works the whole body, or can target specific body parts.

Target different body parts by either standing, sitting, kneeling or placing your hands on the platform while doing a series of exercises.

You can do strengthening,  stretching or even balance exercises.

Whole Body Vibration (WBV) refers to the action of the whole body being exposed to vibration through a vibrating platform or unit.  It allows the user to gain most of the physiological benefits of exercise and therapy, but in a much shorter time frame.

There are 3 main ways in which a WBV platform can operate. Our core focus is to educate the public about WBV, it’s application, the various forms of WBV movement and it diverse benefits.

HOW DOES WHOLE BODY VIBRATION WORK?

•Whole Body Vibration (WBV) works as a wake up call to the complete neuro-, musculo-skeletal system

•Firing these cells increases circulation in the tissues

•This allows for more oxygen and nutrients to flow into inactive areas

•WBV boosts tissue activity on a physiologic level, increasing local metabolism

•Improving cellular activity and repair

•Enhances Brain plasticity due to proprioceptive afferent barrage

•Exercise is comprised of Acceleration/ Deceleration motions.

•G-Force is a unit of acceleration and kilonewton (KN) isa unit of force.

•The A3 WBV units produce between 1.8-2.5 KN (1800-2500newtons)

•That equals to approx. 4 Gs for a 80kg or 176lbs user.

•Since G Force is related to weight, a 350Lbs user would experience up to 8 Gs.

•All the while minimizing the risk of injury

WBV PROCESS DIAGRAM

Based on a spinal reflex arc similar to knee jerk reflex

Recruits 100% of myo fibers

More complete contraction

To fatigue faster

With very low risk of injury

TONIC VIBRATORY REFLEX

Frequency

Measured in Hz, this refers to the amount of repeated vibrating cycles per second

The higher the frequency, the larger the increase in force being generated on the musculoskeletal system

Amplitude

This is the displacement in vibration from peak to peak, measured in mm

The higher the amplitude, the greater the variation in movement, creating greater intensity during training

Duration

Measured in either minutes or seconds

Determines the length of the workout or therapy session

Position

The body position while on the vibration unit

Your body position determines the focus of the concentrated vibration

WBV EXERCISES AND/OR REDEVELOPS THE POSTURAL MUSCLES, JOINTS, AND REFLEXES AFTER INJURY/DISEASE

During WBV exercise, the body tries to keep the head and body steady and upright. All the muscles that keep the body in this position are exercised as a reaction to the oscillating movements. At 25 Hz speed, the units produces 1500 repetitions per minute! As you can see, this produces a strong training effect. Additional work-out benefits can then be achieved by adding other voluntary movements into the program as described by our exercise posters!

The muscle contractions described above increase muscle strength, tone and endurance in time. Muscular and neurologic coordination is improved. The effect on muscles is similar to that of other powered exercise devices, such as treadmills and bicycles.

WBV IMPROVES MUSCLE STRENGTH, REFLEXES, AND JOINT MOTION

Exercise can reduce pain and disability by decrease muscle inhibition and by improving local circulation. Unfortunately, most osteoarthritis sufferers tend to not adhere to an exercise regimen, due to the discomfort associated with working out. The more difficult the exercise, the less likely they will do it. WBV is particularly suited for these people because it exercises the postural system. WBV it is easy to use, the exercise sessions are short and best of ll it is safe!

WBV REDUCES THE PAIN AND DISABILITY ASSOCIATED WITH OSTEOARTHRITIS

Parkinson's patients benefit from light exercise. Heavy and prolonged exercise is a contraindication to this disorder. The short exercise sessions on WBV, the stimulation rate and the ability to only target particular muscles make WBV a natural for Parkinson sufferers. WBV allows people with Parkinson's disease to enjoy the benefits of exercise.

WBV ALLOWS PARKINSON'S PATIENTS TO EXERCISE WHICH CAN SLOW THE PROGRESS OF THE DISEASE

WBV can be used to exercise the perineal muscles of the pelvic basin. Stimulating them at a rapid rate of about 25Hz while holding these muscles contracted improves their strength. This can potentially reduce incontinence in patients with such weak muscles.

WBV CAN HELP INCONTINENCE

Diabetics can benefit hugely from exercise,  particularly if the exercise can improve blood circulation to their lower extremities. Unfortunately these patients are often not able to sustain prolonged, because proper insulin levels must be maintained. Thus WBV is well suited to the needs of diabetics.

PROPRIOCEPTION

Proprioception is the system in our body responsible for body awareness in space and time.  Proprioception helps us to balance, be able to touch our nose with our eyes closed, and meet someone's hand at the right time for a handshake.  When this system is not functioning correctly, our bodies have a decreased ability to coordinate movements and work in our daily lives.

By adding whole body vibration to your treatment regime, we are able to integrate more systems than simply the musculoskeletal system, thereby leaving a longer lasting effect.

MUSCLE FIBER RECRUITMENT

Standard exercise and rehabilitation programs usually only incorporate movement patterns in one direction (forward, backward, up, down, etc.)  When you exercise on the whole body vibration machine, it challenges the body in multiple directions at once.  Because the surface is unstable, the body must recruit more muscle fibers to help maintain stability.  By adding in multiplanar movements, your muscles will be prepared to take on more difficult activities in daily life.

INCREASED HEART RATE

Since the body recruits more muscle fibers, the blood supply needed increases.  When more blood is needed, it takes less time for the heart to elevate the heart rate.  This shortens the time you need to spend working out and increases the efficacy of your exercise.
